The Lady of the Rivers

The Lady of the Rivers is the latest addition to a long line of popular books by Philippa Gregory. This book is no exception to her great writing skills. I do have to admit I love historical fiction, so this book was right up my ally. The story takes place in England during the time of the War of the Roses Jacquetta, Duchess of Bedford is the focus of the story. She marries at the age of 14 to a husband who only wants her "seeing" abilities. Thrust into court life whether she likes it or not, Jacquetta figures out her life is no longer hers. The young Queen Margaret of Anjou knows of Jacquetta's abilities and keeps her close to her side, putting Jacquetta's life in jeopardy. The story is an enjoyable read, and to find out what happens to the life Jacquetta longs for and the life she must live pick up the book at the library.

Queen of Kings written by Maria Dahvana Headley is a fascinating book. I loved it! Everyone knows the story of Queen Cleopatra, but what if the story was far different from the one told? What if it involved magic, witches, vampires and all sorts of different evil creatures? What if Queen Cleopatra did not die? Interested yet? I was, and I was not disappointed. Once you start to read Queen of Kings, you will not be able to put it down. I'll give you just a little bit more of the story, after Cleopatra learns of Anthony's death, she seeks out an evil goddess. From there the story takes off on her desire to return to Anthony and seek out her revenge on her enemies. Definitely a book to check out, let us know what you think.

A Library Joke

A chicken walks into the library. It goes up to the circulation desk and says: "book, bok, bok, boook". The librarian hands the chicken a book. It tucks it under his wing and runs out. A while later, the chicken runs back in, throws the first book into the return bin and goes back to the librarian saying: "book, bok, bok, bok, boook". Again the librarian gives it a book, and the chicken runs out. The librarian shakes her head. Within a few minutes, the chicken is back, returns the book and starts all over again: "boook, book, bok bok boook". The librarian gives him yet a third book, but this time as the chicken is running out the door, she follows it. The chicken runs down the street, through the park and down to the riverbank. There, sitting on a lily pad is a big, green frog. The chicken holds up the book and shows it to the frog, saying: "Book, bok, bok, boook". The frog blinks, and croaks: "read-it, read-it, read-it".

Poor Usborne First Picture Action Rhymes! I came upon this in the children's room while alphabetizing board books. Due to the rainy season we've been having, it's a good reminder to always keep library books dry. It's also a good reason why we still say no drinks in the library. I couldn't believe how much mold was on this book! Needless to say, it has been discarded.

The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb was written by Melanie Benjamin. The book is based on the real Mrs. Tom Thumb, Mercy Lavinia “Vinnie” Bump. Who grew up right here in Massachusetts. The story is about Vinnie's life before, and during her time with P.T. Barnum. During a time when women, especially a small women was expected to stay hidden at home for their own protection from the world. Vinnie chooses her own fate and leaves the safety and comfort of her home. Her travels take her first to a "freak show" where she is taught a hard lesson about the world around her. She is finally partnered with P.T. Barnum and together they begin their planning of her celebrity. What ensues is a lasting friendship and one of the most followed events of its time. Her wedding to Tom Thumb. The book was a good read, and kept me interested right up to the end. If you see a copy at the library be sure to grab it!

Pillsbury Christmas 2011

Every year I look forward to the release of the Pillsbury Christmas cookbook. I find the recipes easy to follow and delicious to eat. This year's book is no exception. I was able to find lots of holiday treats for my family. The pictures of the recipes are very helpful to show what the finished product should look like. I was able to find recipes for quick dinners and table clearing desserts. I hate to admit it, but I am not the best cook out there and anything that is easy to make I appreciate. Let me know if anyone finds any recipes they like in this holiday cookbook.

The Night Circus

The Night Circus by Erin Monrgenstern was a great book! I loved it! I loved the story laid out before me about two magicians who place a wager on who can be the better teacher, which means to them they are the best magician in the world. Each magician tutors a student and the students must complete in a game. Unfortunately, the students are not aware of how serious the competition is. The game takes place amongst a magical backdrop, the circus. The circus is an ever changing fantasy land with each student adding to that fantasy. The reader immediately gets pulled into the magical mystery competition. I will not give any of it away, but get your hands on this new book. A great fairy/fantasy book for all.

Hunger builds up an appetite

Hunger, by Jackie Morse Kessler, had me at the synopsis: a girl struggling with anorexia is given the option to become, Famine, one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. It is an interesting spin between the popular paranormal novel and teen issue novel. Like Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson, this book wasn't preachy or unrealistic. I never felt like I had to label it as your typical "problem/teen issue" novel. It is a good book not just for teens struggling with eating disorders. Girls will emulate the feelings of Lisbeth and her trepidation at her new role as she struggles with her self-perception and her family/friends. I find some authors don't know what teens think or talk like, but Kessler nails it. The book is based on the author's own struggle with bulemia. Lisbeth is based on her real teen friend Lisa who also had an eating disorder. Next book in the series is called "Rage" starring another new horseman, which will be out in April.

The Scortch Trials missing heat?

The Scortch Trails, Book 2 of the Maze Runner series, by James Dashner suffers the problem of all trilogies. The sole purpose of the second novel is to build up for the "big secret" revealed in the third. After the ending of the Maze Runner, (spoiler alert) the kids thought they had finally found a safe place to relax until they wake up and are greeted by people with a disease that makes them crazy. A doctor from W.I.C.K.E.D. tells them that they are all infected with a disease known as "The Flare" and they must travel through a desert like arena to find the cure before they all go insane. Much like the maze, the Scortch is full of trials and strange monsters. Our hero, Thomas, is left without Theresa, and doesn't know where she is. As he slowly regains his memories from before the maze, the reader is hinted to what really happened. The book has alot of action and even a little akward romance as the kids struggle to survive again. There are losses, gains, and surprises along the way. I can't wait to finally find out what happens in the third.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

I think I am officially done with Nicholas Sparks. I find his stuff so formulaic at this point. This reminded me of an old lifetime original movie (or "Sleeping With the Enemy" starring Julia Roberts from the 90's) it is about a woman named Erin who escapes her abusive husband and lands in North Carolina, on the run and skittish about meeting new people. She's worried her husband will come back for her and makes every effort to try to be invisible. Too bad she's absolutely beautiful and attracts the attention of the local store owner, a widower with two wonderful kids...oh and he's a great dad and absolutely perfect (of course!). I just think Sparks should expose character flaws as well as the good. I don't consider a widower still loving his wife who passed away suddenly a character flaw.

Zombies Vs Unicorns by Holly Black

This book is what happens when two teen authors get into a fun argument about how awesome zombies are rather than unicorns. Holly Black from the popular "Tithe: A Modern Fairytale" and Justine Larabalestier, wife of Scott Westerfeld compile short stories from popular teen authors like Meg Cabot, Garth Nix, and Cassandra Clare to prove once and for all which one is better. Each author has a new twist on the popular tropes of each. I really enjoyed Meg Cabot's "Princess Prettypants" and "The Third Virgin" by Kathleen Duey for Team Unicorn and "Cold Hands" by Cassandra Clare from Team Zombie. Each story was unique and I never felt tired of reading about either topic. As a person who loves both zombies and unicorns, I really couldn't decide which was better by the end.

Cold Sight by Leslie Parrish

It's always fun to find a new author. I stumbled across this book by serendipity. It reminds me slightly of the Kay Hooper Bishop series of psychic FBI agents. (She really needs to write those faster!) Cold Sight is about a man with psychic skills that he and a few others use to solve crimes. He got "burned" on his last case and is trying to stay out of everything in a small town. But, murder and a pushy reporter find him anyway. The characters are likable, the story has a nice twist and I enjoyed it. If you like your suspense with a little romance, give it a try. Can't wait for book two, Cold Touch.But that comes out in April!

Squirrel seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris

Once again David Sedaris indulges in the darker side of human nature...only this time using animals. This anthropomorphism might remind you of picture books of your youth but don't be fooled. These aren't your ordinary sweet happy endings or lovable animals. Awkward first dates, "one uppers", racism, parenting, know it alls, chronic complainers, AA, Sedaris covers it all and more. His endings leave you thinking about the characters long after.

Reckless by Cornelia Funke

Definately for an older readership than Inkheart, Funke takes you into "MirrorWorld", a fascinating fairy tale gone wrong. Jacob Reckless stumbles upon the entrance to Mirrorworld in his estranged father's study. He spends years becoming an infamous treasure hunter for fairytale items that you may recognize like glass slippers (Cinderella) or a golden ball (Frog Prince). One day his younger brother Will finds the entrance and is cursed by the Dark Fairy. He begins a transformation into a Goyl, a creature that is stone inside and out. If Jacob cannot stop the spell, Will will turn evil. With a ragtag bunch of helpers, Jacob traverses Mirrorworld risking life and limb before his brother turns completely to stone. Although Funke seems to leave alot of details of this world out, I enjoyed not having lengthy descriptions. It left much up to my imagination. This world is full of fairies, dwarfs, dragons, unicorns, orgres and many other fantasy archetypes. With danger at every turn, it begs the question why does Jacob keeping going back? The ending leaves room for a sequel, and I look forward to it.

Strings Attached by Judith Blundell

Last year Judith Blundell won the National Book Award for "What I Saw and How I Lied", an amazing tale of tough choices. I was not disappointed with her upcoming novel "Strings Attached". Not only does the setting, which takes place in RI and NY, give special appeal to local teen readers, the character of Kit is very relatable. After a disturbing summer of losing her brother and her boyfriend to the army, Kit escapes to New York City to pursue her dream of being a dancer. Kit struggles living on her own. Luckily her ex-boyfriend's dad, a man with lots of dangerous connections, shows up when she needs it most. All Nate needs is a favor here and there in return but is it right? This novel is another one of tough choices and surprising twists. The author's style is a subtle drama that is straight to the point. I would highly recommend.

The Slap Hits Home

The Slap by Australian author, Christos Tsiolkas, caught my eye because it took a day that should have been simple and joyous, a family barbecue, and turned it upside down when an adult slaps a friend's child. Most of the main characters at the party are developed in first person narratives before and after the incident. By doing this, the author shows the dark sides to all these individuals and explains how "the slap" has or will affect them. The characters were so honest in their thoughts but deceptive in their actions. They were very realistic but in a scary and truthful way. As each character chooses a side, the only thing to know is that things will never be the same and your view on each character never will be either. Manolis, the Greek grandfather, was by far one of my favorite characters. His thoughts upon old age, life and death, and marriage were darkly comical yet melancholic. Christos succeeded in taking something so simple and seemingly innocent, a scolding for a spoiled child and showed how it could ruin lives.

Super Sad Love Story is Super Sad

Super Sad Love Story by Gary Shteyngart tells of the love (or lack there of) between Lenny Abramov and Eunice Park, both children of immigrant families during the imminent collapse of America in the near future. These star crossed lovers face ageism, racism, dysfunctional families, and major self esteem issues in a wartorn world where everyone's credit rating & looks are the most important things. There are so many parallels in this book to real life; From going into a bar and being "rated" online by their peers to live media broadcasts of meaningless banter (think YouTube), this world isn't too far away. Everyone is constantly innondated by their apparati's (think blackberries) to buy and shop. And in the midst of all this consumerism there's Lenny. I loved Lenny as a character although his love obsession seemed like the main character in Nabokov's Lolita. He is a relic of an older time. He loves books even though everyone else just "scans" electronic texts now and thinks they smell. He wants to be a HNWI, High Net Worth Individual and live forever as he competes in a market overrun by youth. There are many hidden gems in this book like Jeffrey Otter. Mostly it makes everyone mad and reflective, like maybe I should get rid of Facebook and call people once in a while.

An even darker retelling of Peter Pan

The Child Theif by Brom was inspired by the dark original tale of Peter Pan. This one finds Peter luring children from their bad home lives in New York City into Avalon. Unlike the typical Neverland, Avalon is a scary place, full of flesh eaters, witches, and a mysterious fog. The queen is kept locked up and the trees/food are dying. Peter trains his "devils" for war and many are slaughtered on the battlefield. Captain Hook and the Flesh eaters were adults who were traped on Avalon during Colonial times. As their minds and flesh turn black and evil, they begin fighting with the the Devils and try to burn down Avalon to reach the queen, their only hope of escape. The novel switches between Nick(a new Devil), Peter, and the Captain. The lines between right and wrong are blurred in this novel. At various points, you are sympathetic for each of these characters. Brom weaves a dark, gruesome Neverland where fairies like Tink are considered "pests" and children are tortured. The end begs the question, who really won the war?

Lord of the Flies with Zombies!

If you like Lord of the Flies as much as I did and are looking for something similar, I recommend "The Enemy" by Charles Higson. In this story, we follow a group of kids trying to survive a disease outbreak where everyone over the age of 16 becomes diseased and those who don't die immediately walk the earth looking to destroy the kids remaining. The kids must deal with limited supplies, frequent attacks, power squabbles, and no communication with the outside world. The "zombies" are getting smarter and organized which leads the kids to search for somewhere safer. When a stranger comes with the promise of greener pastures, the kids venture through London to Buckingham Palace. But is this stranger lying? Is anywhere safe? Although not as eloquent as Lord of the Flies, there were definite moments in the book that gave me the same harrowing chills. Another great recommendation is the "Gone" Series by Michael Grant, where everyone over the age of 15 disappears and the kids remaining are left trapped in their town and begin to develop super powers.

DeadMan Wonderland by Jinsei Kataoka (Manga)

I think this is exactly the kind of book I would recommend to ages 16 and up who liked the Hunger Games. In the future, Japan is devistated by an earthquake and they are forced to open a prison/entertainment island called Deadman Wonderland in order to generate revenue for their failing economy. It is entirely run by prisoners as they must compete in gruesome games to earn credits towards their survival. In Deadman Wonderland all death row inmates wear collars that inject poison, if they do not earn 1,000 credits every 3 days in order to win the antidote they will die. This book had a great concept as an innocent boy is convicted of murder and must endure the games to survive while a mysterious girl that claims to have known him before the earthquake appears in the cell with him. I can't wait to read the next installment.

The Infinities

The Infinities by John Banville is the latest book I have read. The story follows a family while they hold vigil at the dying father's bedside. The story is really not about that but about the Greek Gods watching. The idea that Zeus and Hermes are watching and getting involved in the every day life of this family makes for a good story. The ending was alright, this book was a good summer read.

Elm Creek Quilts Series

I am currently reading the third book in the Jennifer Chiaverini series and I am enjoying the characters and the setting. While quilting is a part of the story, you don't need to know anything about quilting to like these books. The first one is the Quilter's Apprentice. Give it a try.

The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney

This book is ideal for second-third graders. It is all about the adventures of a class hamster named Humphrey. Not only can Humphrey understand what everyone is saying but he's learning right along with them. Even though Humphrey can't talk back he tries to help everyone around him from a mother uncomfortable at learning English to getting kids to enjoy peace and quiet without TV. I really enjoyed the innocence and intelligence of seeing things through Humphrey's eyes. He will win the reader's heart.

This book is the first in a series. If you want to read more books about hamsters, try the I Freddy series by Dietlof Reiche.

Brownie & Pearl Get Dolled Up by Cynthia Rylant (Picture Book Review)

In the era of Fancy Nancy and Pinkalicious, no one can resist a cute dress up tale. Brownie and her cat, Pearl, use feathers, sparkles, and makeup to show her parents how they get "dolled up". With only one sentence or less on each page, this book is a great start for toddlers who can't sit through longer books like Fancy Nancy and Pinkalicious. The cartoon drawings are filled with bright colors that any toddler is sure to enjoy.

Schooled by Gordon Korman (Middle School Book Review)

This book was recommended to me by one of my favorite library patrons and I was not disappointed. The Girl Who Cased The Moon

I recently had the pleasure of reading The Girl Who Cased The Moon. This is the third novel by Sarah Addison Allen. The moment I began reading the story I was enchanted with it, I could not put it down. I was looking for a good book to read, and I found it. The story combines some of my favorite elements; to start a nice story, a little bit of mystery, add to that a bit of magic and don't forget the cake. Combine all these ingredients and you have me hooked. Curious yet? The story follows a young girl back to her Mom's hometown to live with a grandfather she never knew. From there the story unfolds into a magical tale, that you can't help but be drawn into. I'm trying not to give anything away, but I highly recommend that if you are looking for a nice story this is it. If this book is not available check out her other books, Garden Spells, and The Sugar Queen, both are available at the library.

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater (Teen Book Review)

This teen novel takes place after "Shiver" and continues the story of Sam and Grace. Sam is a werewolf that shifts depending on the temperature which in Minnesota is very unpredicatable (this sounds alot like New England!). After many years of shifting, a werewolf becomes a wolf permenantely. Sam saves Grace from the wolf pack when she is young and watches her grow up. He falls in love with her and eventually gets the courage to meet her. Sam is worried that it will be his last summer as a human.

WARNING: This contains spoilers if you haven't read Shiver.
Sam has shifted back to human, despite the belief that this should have been his last summer. Meanwhile, Grace has been very ill and she worries that she might be finally become a werewolf. (hello irony) Sam also has to deal with three new werewolves that were former rock stars. If they are recognized in town, it could mean alot of trouble. In addition, Grace's parents don't like Sam very much. Told from alternating points of view, Maggie smoothly transitions between the characters and gives them their own style. Cole is a wonderful addition to the cast. He compliments Isabele, Grace's friend, well and their banter reminds me of old Bogart movies. In my opinion, this book was better than Shiver. Look for it at your library this July.

"The Eraserheads" by Kate Banks is a delightfully imaginative picture book from the author of "Max's Words". An owl, pig, and crocodile eraser take a journey through whatever a boy draws on paper. Luckily they can erase the scary parts! There are many funny instances such as when the Owl is stranded on an island full of animals, he erases the tiger's teeth. The message is kind and didactic: "We all learn from our mistakes" It is a good read aloud for storytime and timely due to the popularity of Japanese erasers.

I can't help but laugh over these hilarious songs and illustrations in this picture book. Each can be sung to a popular tune like "Take me Out to the Ball Game" or "Happy Birthday". Kids will giggle over the comical lyrics that replace the originals. Rather than:

My Bonnie lies over the sea
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
Oh bring back my Bonnie to me "
it is:
"My mother just rushes through bedtime.
With stories she sure cuts them short.

Coben's Newest - "Caught"

I just finished Harlan Coben's newest suspense novel, "Caught," and I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed. Having waited months since hearing of the book's upcoming release, I was anxious to get it home when I found it waiting for me last week. I personally found the book lacking the depth of suspense and plot twists of Coben's other stand alone works, and the characters are never developed enough for the reader to make any sort of connection with them. Maybe after so many great reads, I expected too much from this one. The plot simply didn't pull me in and make me not want to put it down......rather, there were a few nights that I actually fell asleep trying to make my way through it. While I remain a loyal fan of Coben, "Caught" has not made my list of his must reads. It will be interesting to hear what other readers have to say about it.

New Tricks and Dog Days by John Levitt

The Dog Days series by John Levitt is a good suggestion for anyone who likes urban fantasy and Jim Butcher. Mason is a musician and a magic practitioner who has as his partner his "dog" Lou. Except Lou is magical and not really a dog, he's an Ifrit. Mason used to work as an enforcer keeping wayward practitioners in line. Now he just keeps finding problems, or they find him. There are three books in the series so far, and they get better. The characters are well defined and, dare I say, likable. Give them a try. I am reading the third now.

Linwood Barclay's "Never Look Away"

If you're a follower of our blog, you may have read one of my earlier posts about Harlan Coben read-alikes. I'm an avid fan of Coben's stand alone suspense novels, and am eagerly awaiting his newest release, "Caught," which hits the shelves this Tuesday. Between his latest stand alone, "Hold Tight," and this newest release, I've been forced to scour our library's shelves and on-line catalog to find an author who can match Coben's ability to offer up a true suspense novel that keeps you guessing up till the very end. It was through this search that I came across Linwood Barclay. After just one novel, I was hooked. "Fear the Worst," "No Time for Goodbye," and "Too Close to Home" are all teriffic suspense reads. His latest, "Never Look Away," is my current read, and has yet to disappoint.

In "Never Look Away," David Harwood, a small town newspaper reporter is faced with more questions than answers when his wife mysteriously disappears in the midst of what may possibly be the biggest break for his career, a political scandal involving 'bought' votes and a controversial privately funded prison proposed for Harwood's hometown of Promise Falls. As David sees the evidence against him mounting, he's forced to question whether his wife, and mother of his young son, has actually acted upon her recent contemplations of suicide, or if something far more sinister is going on. David quickly finds that his wife is (quite literally) not the woman that he thought she was, but will he be able to collect all the facts and piece them together to uncover the true story before he's arrested for a crime that he didn't commit?

With almost 3/4 of the book read, I'm anxious to get home and see how the story ends. While I might ordinarily be disappointed to get to the last page of such a suspenseful book, I'm finding comfort in the knowledge that another great read is only 2 days away........(Harlan Coben's "Caught" to be released Tuesday, March 23, 2010).

Fancy Nancy is a cute little girl who loves all things "fancy." She has an extensive vocabulary including French words, which are easily explained throughout the picture book. She has many adventures from choosing the top of the Christmas tree to the choosing a fancy dog. I had the opportunity to host a Fancy Nancy Tea Party, which was a great success. Jane O'Connor (author) has also written a Fancy Nancy series as "easy readers" which are geared towards the beginning reader age group.

More Zombie Fiction!

I just finished "Dead Tossed Waves" by Carrie Ryan, a companion novel to "The Forrest of Hands and Teeth." It was excellent! I loved her use of the "dead tossed waves" throughout the novel. It started off a bit slow with Gabry being very timid and whiney. She was always complacent with being safe in the village and never dared to venture over the gates where the "Mudo" (Zombies) roamed. When she is convinced by a crush to climb the fence, her world is forever changed. She grew throughout the novel. Although not considered a sequel, I recommend reading "Hands and Teeth" first. The book continues Mary's journey and explains what has happend to the other characters from "Hands and Teeth."

Shutter Island

I will be the first to tell you that I'm not an avid movie goer. I'm typically not one to sit still for any length of time, and as the house lights dim, my mind is filled with thoughts of all the tasks that I could (and should) be spending the time on. That being said, I decided to venture out this weekend to see "Shutter Island," the newest Martin Scorsese film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which is based on the 2003 novel of the same title, by Dennis Lehane. As I had not yet read the book, my pick was based on the the various reviews and actor interviews that have been inundating the airwaves over the past few weeks.

I have to admit that I was not immediately taken in by the film. I found some of the initial dialogue difficult to hear, and the opening scene had the dim, flat look of a poorly made low budget horror film. As the movie continued, however, I found myself pulled into the plot's twists and turns, and the darkly sinister feel of horror/suspense movies of decades past (think Alfred Hitchcock, Vincent Price). Many of the scenes left me with far more questions than answers, though everything came together with an ending that, while I had my suspicions, was shocking none the less.

My only regret is that I had not read Lehane's book before seeing the film. While not knowing the story gave the ending more of an impact, I wonder what subtle details I would have picked up on if I knew what to be looking for......I guess there's something to be said for seeing a film more than just once. As "Shutter Island" (the book) was waiting for me on the holds shelf when I arrived at the library this morning, I think I'll take the opportunity to read it before viewing the movie a second time. It will be interesting to see how true to the novel Kalogridis' screenplay and Scorsese's interpretation of it actually is.

Cupcake by Charise Mericle Harper, is a new picture book that would be excellent for dessert decorating events or birthday and friendship/teamwork story time units. Cupcake is vanilla and feels that she is "plain" until she meets candle who finds a way to brighten her up. It is a fun and humorous story as the cupcake and the candle try various objects to make her special. There is also a handy recipe for cupcakes. I would say about 90% of picture books about food now contain recipes. You can find them in our library catalog by searching for the keyword "includes recipe"

There are many Lincoln biographies out there. One of my favorites is Chasing Lincoln's Killer and Manhunt by James Swanson. This delightful picture book shows another aspect of Lincoln, his humor. Through real quotes from eyewitnesses, this picture book weaves in jokes Lincoln told his friends and guests during his childhood and presidency. From his nonsensical poem, "Abraham Lincoln, his hand and his pen, he will be good but God knows when" to his marriage to his considerably shorter wife, Mary Todd, "Here I am and here is Mrs. Lincoln, that's the long and short of it" Lincoln learned the power of laughter. Whenever he had to give bad news or was pressed for information, he would tell jokes. I think this would be a great introduction of President Lincoln to a first or second grade classroom.

I just finished the brand new Blood Ties by Kay Hooper. This is the 12th book in the Bishop FBI psychic series. I am hooked. The stories move quickly and keep you reading. The books are developed in groups of three and Blood Ties is the third in this group after Blood Dreams and Blood Ties. I went back and read the beginnings when I found Kay. Do you have to? No, but you will want to!

Sue Grafton delivers with her latest - "U is for Undertow"

I met Grafton's character Kinsey Millhone 10+ years ago, rushed through the series to catch up to where the series was up to in the alphabet. I then, as many fans did, waited patiently for each of the successive offerings from Ms. Grafton. Going back a couple of letters ago, I began to feel somewhat obligated rather than excited to read the books as they came out. Happily, I can state that "U is for Undertow" has brought me back into the fold. The story line bounces back and forth between Kinsey's current time (which is the eighties) and to the sixties. Grafton successfully weaves the case Kinsey is investigating along with her personal quest for answers about family matters that have long been kept from her. I loved the book and am looking forward (again) to the next expected book - "V is for something".....

Coben Style Authors

Having read (and loved) all his stand alone works, I'm eagerly awaiting Harlan Coben's next novel, "Caught," which is due out early this year. In the meantime, I've been on a frantic search for an author who has Coben's ability to keep me guessing until the very end. Through my search, I've found two great suspense authors, James Siegel and Linwood Barclay. I plowed through Siegel's "Derailed," "Detour" and "Deceit" within the matter of a week, disappointed that he had no newer works to turn to. Then came Linwood Barclay. I'm in the process of reading "Too Close to Home," with "No Time to Say Goodbye" and "Fear the Worst" waiting for me. So far, "Too Close to Home" is a book that only the onset of slumber has been able to pry from my hands. For any Coben fans who, like me, are impatient for "Caught," I highly recommend taking a look at either of these two authors. You won't be disappointed.......

Better late than never?

I just read Janet Evanovich's first Stephanie Plum mystery "One for the Money." Lots of folks follow her but I had never managed to get to it, so I picked one up this week. It was a little slow to start for me but the characters grew on me by the end of the book. The plot was good and well paced. A female bounty hunter is an interesting premise. I think I'll read the second. There are now fifteen books in the series, so if I still like Stephanie after book two, I'll have plenty to look forward to in the future.

Is Steampunk the next rage in books?

Over the few months, I have been hearing a reemergence of the term "steampunk" when describing novels. This led me to research what actually is "steampunk"? From what I can gather across the Internet, steampunk in its broadest definition can refer to a sub genre of science fiction or fantasy where steam power is widely used. The setting can occur in 19th century Victorian England or in a altered history where technology arose differently. An old example of steampunk would be the authors Juls Verne or H.G. Wells...think Time Machine and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

My first venture into steampunk fiction was the recent teen release "Leviathan" by Scott Westerfeld. This novel occurred in an alternate World War I scenario. The battle was between countries who embraced mechanical technology versus biological technology. This is a world where Charles Darwin discovered DNA and began genetically splicing animals and machines. The result is living airships with their own ecosystems that provide fuel. This was an extremely imaginative book. I would recommend it for adults and kids alike.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

I read this book straight through in one day. Needless to say I absolutely loved it (and not just because it was about zombies) In a postapoclyaptic world, Mary is a curious teen desperately searching for escape in her small village. She can either be wed to a man she doesn't love or devote herself to the mysterious Sisterhood. Raised on stories from her mother that an ocean once existed on Earth, Mary wants to leave the village despite the hordes of zombies that surround it. A fence is the only thing separating the villagers from these "Unconsecrated". Once bitten, a villager is either killed or cast out to the zombies. The suspense and timing of this book was great. I kept wanting to put it down to go to sleep but there was always more action afoot. Like many zombie novels, the unconsecrated represent something more. They are a physical representation of the secrets and fears of the villagers. Although Mary was a teen, I think that this novel could appeal to adult audiences as well. She was strong willed and driven in her quest to seek the truth, no matter the consequences, which leaves me in some scenes being very frustrated with her (which is a good thing). So if you are feeling trapped under a few feet of snow this winter, this comes highly recommended.
