Yes, it finally happened and Jane Austin is probably rolling over in her grave. A new hit sensation that is selling out in bookstores everywhere is giving a fresh take on the Victorian classic, Pride and Prejudice. Using the same proper language (and I've heard almost word for word in some cases) and characters, Seth Grahame-Smith keeps the basic plot with a zombie twist. There are even humorous black and white sketch pictures inter dispersed.
This book brings up three thoughts for me. 1. Wow, someone is actually going to get me interested in reading Pride and Prejudice. I don't think I will be the only one either. Let's also not forget, that Stephenie Meyer gave reference to this book as inspiration for the original Twilight book. Will something like this book, which holds the same themes as the classic, ever be considered on the summer reading lists? or as a classic itself? 2. Will zombies be the new vampires? I honestly can't see a love story like Twilight with zombies, but you never know. 3. This is not copyright infringement due to the fact that anything published before 1923 is under public domain. Will this spawn other future authors to remake classics?
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith is currently on order in the SAILS network. Reserve today!
If you like this book, rumor has it that he is pitching his next book: Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.
